History of the Mass Media in the United States: An Encyclopedia examines the ways in which the mass media affect American society relative mass and also the ways in which the mass media are in turn affected by societal developments in the United States. Mass media, for the purposes of this work, are defined as: newspapers, advertising, books relative mass and magazines, public relations, motion pictures, radio, television, cable television, relative mass and photography or photojournalism. The time period covered by the Encyclopedia is from 1690 (the founding of the first American newspaper) to 1995 - more than 300 years of mass media history. The Encyclopedia is comprised of more than 475 alphabetically arranged entries of from 500 to 5,000 words; some 200 scholars have contributed to the work. Entries range from key areas of newspaper history, to major court cases relative mass and important legislation, to the concerns of ethnic relative mass and special interest groups. The editor relative mass and her contributors have also taken particular care to examine the technological, legal, legislative, economic relative mass and political developments that have affected the media.
